Four seats, still a piston helicopter

Robinson developed the R44 during the 1980s, extending its light-helicopter concept to a four-seat cabin. The company history records FAA certification in 1992. The larger aircraft broadened the role beyond the two-seat R22 while retaining piston-engine power.

Why the Raven II name matters

The Raven II is the fuel-injected member of the family. Its IO-540 installation distinguishes it from the carbureted Raven I. Those model names matter when comparing performance or choosing a simulator aircraft: a family label alone does not establish the engine, equipment or control configuration.

Hydraulics shape the cyclic feel

The R44 II handbook describes hydraulic servos that remove main-rotor feedback from the cyclic and collective. The light normal control feel therefore belongs to the assisted system, rather than a direct reflection of rotor loads. Loss of assistance produces much heavier controls.

Friction and centering are different

The cyclic friction knob resists movement in both axes; the collective has its own friction lever. Pedals use direct push-pull controls and an elastomeric trim spring. A simulator centering spring is an interpretation of hardware support, not a measurement of these friction devices.

Governor and autopilot have separate roles

The governor adjusts throttle to help maintain engine RPM above 80 percent. Optional HeliSAS adds a cyclic centering tendency when SAS is engaged. An R44 profile therefore needs to distinguish the basic hydraulic controls from an aircraft fitted with that optional system.

X-Plane 12X-Plane 11

The R44 extends Robinson’s light-helicopter layout into a four-seat cabin. The Raven II uses a fuel-injected Lycoming IO-540 engine and retains the family’s two-blade main and tail rotors.

This starting point selects Robinson R44. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Hydraulic cyclic assistance motivates low supported centering. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load. Cyclic damping adds resistance to hardware motion.

The selected neutral remains separate from collective friction and governor operation. Local force trim is off. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The R44 uses hydraulically boosted cyclic control, with collective friction treated separately. Its two-blade rotor and piston governor have independently stated rotor and engine references. The manufacturer’s 408-rpm value is a 102-percent rotor condition.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Perché qui: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength0%

Perché qui: Hydraulic cyclic assistance motivates low supported centering. The baseline spring is 0. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 52.5 KIAS.

VSKYLABS R44 Raven II operating handbookRobinson R44 Raven II POH section2 limitationsVSKYLABS Aerospace Simulations Aircraft Center: VSKYLABS Robinson R44 Raven II
Spring deadband2%

Perché qui: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load35%

Perché qui: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.35 with an indicated-speed reference of 105 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Perché qui: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor100%

Perché qui: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start14.7 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full52.5 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Perché qui: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed0%

Perché qui: Adds permitted spring resistance above the full-blend speed. Zero removes this high-speed increase.

Centre stiffening cap5

Perché qui: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load100%

Perché qui: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 1 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Perché qui: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Perché qui: Scales supported pitch-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes pitch response.

Trim relief (aileron)30%

Perché qui: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble0%

Perché qui: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps0%

Perché qui: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet0%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Perché qui: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump50%

Perché qui: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Perché qui: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Perché qui: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion0%

Perché qui: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority5%

Perché qui: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.

Meno: a quicker build.

Perché qui: Sets the final flap index for detent normalization. UP plus three detents uses maximum index3.

Aero · Min flap index1

Where this effect begins fading in.

Più: the effect begins later.

Meno: it begins earlier.

Perché qui: Sets the first flap detent that admits buffet; this is a handle index, not degrees.

Aero · Shaker enabledFalse

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Permits shaker at supported warning conditions; the switch does not establish aircraft equipment.
