A trainer shaped by instructor feedback

Boatman’s history describes Piper consulting flight instructors when developing its new trainer in the mid-1970s. The resulting Tomahawk combined a two-door cabin and broad view with deliberately distinctive control and stall characteristics.

A two-seater for weekends around New England

Diette bought his Tomahawk II for short trips with his wife around New England. Martha’s Vineyard and Bar Harbor were among the destinations that became easier to reach, leaving more of a weekend to enjoy after arrival. Their usual journeys were under three hours, with light bags that suited the small aircraft’s role.

The baggage space could still accommodate something unexpected: he once flew home with an Adirondack chair after a successful shopping trip. His account is about choosing journeys that fit a two-seater and enjoying the freedom of making them with his own flying skills.

Returning to flying, then seeing Manhattan from the air

Scott returned to an aircraft type he had trained in decades earlier, working with Rex Damschroder to rebuild his skills. The process took repeated lessons rather than a quick refresher. A visit to his cousin’s airpark became an early travelling goal, while electronic flight planning and navigation added new tools to the landmarks and paper methods he remembered.

Further local practice eventually led to a much larger adventure through Pennsylvania to New York. Flying the Hudson corridor brought nervous anticipation followed by extraordinary views of the Statue of Liberty, the city and even glimpses into apartment buildings.

A winter work trip with older navigation equipment

Cobb set out on a long work trip with a single VOR receiver and no GPS or DME. Headwinds slowed the outbound leg, and deteriorating visibility near his destination prompted him to turn back before finding a route into clearer conditions. He requested flight following and valued the controller’s help with distance information and locating a fuel stop against a snowy landscape.

The return brought a tailwind, but changing clouds led him to add another fuel stop instead of relying on the original plan. He arrived home after sunset. The account shows how weather, navigation equipment and intermediate stops shaped one pilot’s working day. The headwinds, extra stops and controller assistance made this a more involved day than a simple there-and-back flight.

Come il profilo lo modella

Piper PA-38 Tomahawk

Free + Pro
MSFS 2024MSFS 2020X-Plane 11

Piper designed the PA-38-112 Tomahawk for two-seat flight training. It also served touring and personal flying, alongside the larger PA-28 family. MSFS and X-Plane implementations are separate developer products.

This starting point selects Piper PA-38 Tomahawk. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Conventional mechanical controls motivate reversible loading. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

The pitch-trim wheel serves the elevator system; the rudder tab is ground adjusted. Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The PA-38 uses a conventional elevator and fixed stabilizer, a pitch-trim wheel and ground-adjusted rudder tab. Its manual flaps select 0, 21 and 34 degrees. That tail arrangement differs from other Pipers using a stabilator.

Operations ManualPA-38 Tomahawk (X-Plane 11)

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Perché qui: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength74%

Perché qui: Conventional mechanical controls motivate reversible loading. The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 50 KIAS.

Operations ManualPA-38 Tomahawk (X-Plane 11)
Spring deadband4%

Perché qui: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load80%

Perché qui: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.8 with an indicated-speed reference of 100 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Perché qui: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor50%

Perché qui: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start14.0 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full50.0 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Perché qui: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Perché qui: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 50 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Perché qui: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load72%

Perché qui: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.72 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Perché qui: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Perché qui: The pitch-trim wheel serves the elevator system; the rudder tab is ground adjusted. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

Operations ManualPA-38 Tomahawk (X-Plane 11)
Trim relief (aileron)0%

Perché qui: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble40%

Perché qui: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Perché qui: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet35%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Perché qui: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Perché qui: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump65%

Perché qui: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Perché qui: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Perché qui: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Perché qui: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Perché qui: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.

Aero · Max flap index2

Where this effect reaches full strength (or has fully faded, for washouts).

Più: a more gradual build to a later peak.

Meno: a quicker build.

Perché qui: Sets the final flap index for detent normalization. UP plus three detents uses maximum index3.

Aero · Min flap index2

Where this effect begins fading in.

Più: the effect begins later.

Meno: it begins earlier.

Perché qui: Sets the first flap detent that admits buffet; this is a handle index, not degrees.

Aero · Shaker enabledFalse

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Permits shaker at supported warning conditions; the switch does not establish aircraft equipment.
