Cherry Point links the first aircraft with the final trainees

The Marine Corps report places the first AV-8B arrival at Cherry Point in January 1984. Forty years later, the same community marked the qualification of its final two new Harrier pilots, connecting the programme’s beginnings with its planned transition.

The first ski-jump looks like a wall

Moving from the Hawk to the Harrier gave Schofield a much larger set of flying techniques to keep practised. He remembered the vibration on the ground, the view from the cockpit and the unusual experience of hovering over a field with cows nearby. Even returning after a weekend could leave a pilot feeling rusty in one part of the repertoire.

His first carrier ski-jump departure brought a different surprise. From the cockpit, the ramp looked alarmingly like a wall, despite the notes and briefing that explained what would happen. Once the aircraft was airborne, the immediate worry shifted to getting it back aboard.

Joining the Harrier community as its final new class

Corbett and Jorgensen completed the last AV-8B pilot training class with a low-altitude close-air-support training sortie. For Corbett, earning the designation was a proud achievement with an unusual emotional setting: he was entering a community that already knew its aircraft was approaching the end of Marine service.

He described the occasion as bittersweet, recognising both the work behind reaching the cockpit and the significance of being among the final newcomers. The report also gives space to the squadron supporting the two pilots as they moved towards fleet assignments. It records the start of their Harrier careers in spring 2024, without assuming that the transition dates planned at the time describe the fleet’s present status.

Taking the AV-8B from a test programme onto ships

Nalls’s biography describes a move from operational flying into a small test team at Patuxent River after test-pilot school. Four pilots shared work on the new AV-8B, giving him a place in the aircraft’s development as well as experience flying it. The assignments extended beyond a normal squadron’s daily routine.

Shipboard trials took that work onto the Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi and Spanish Príncipe de Asturias, helping establish how the aircraft would operate from those decks. His biography also records engine-restart testing involving Harrier variants and other aircraft. These reported assignments show the range of a test pilot’s working life; the combined totals in the source are not presented as hours flown exclusively in an AV-8B.

X-Plane 11

The AV-8B developed the vectored-thrust Harrier into a second generation of ground-attack aircraft. It served in close air support and reconnaissance roles in the United States, Spain and Italy. The British Harrier II and tandem-seat TAV-8B are related developments. The simulator product represents the AV-8B.

This starting point selects McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

The selected centre accompanies the powered-control aircraft rendition. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Trim response is separate from nozzle angle and vectored-thrust state. Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The AV-8B develops the vectored-thrust Harrier concept for ground-attack work. Its engine/nozzle arrangement and mission systems belong to that aircraft, with British Harrier II and two-seat TAV-8B equipment kept as separately named developments.

Harrier AV-8B XP11

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Perché qui: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength80%

Perché qui: The selected centre accompanies the powered-control aircraft rendition. The baseline spring is 0.8. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 90 KIAS.

Harrier AV-8B XP11
Spring deadband4%

Perché qui: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load25%

Perché qui: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.25 with an indicated-speed reference of 260 KIAS. The hydraulic-load factor of 0.35 scales that modeled term; it is a selected artificial-feel approximation.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Perché qui: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor55%

Perché qui: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start20 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full90 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Perché qui: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed0%

Perché qui: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0. No additional speed-driven stiffening is added; this does not disable independent aerodynamic loading.

Centre stiffening cap5

Perché qui: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load65%

Perché qui: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.65 and 0.65, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load65%

Perché qui: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Perché qui: Trim response is separate from nozzle angle and vectored-thrust state. Pitch authority 0.3 relieves permitted loading; hydraulic centre movement is off. Roll authority is 0.09.

Harrier AV-8B XP11
Trim relief (aileron)9%

Perché qui: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble40%

Perché qui: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps32%

Perché qui: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet30%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Perché qui: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet10%

Perché qui: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker90%

Perché qui: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump90%

Perché qui: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble50%

Perché qui: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble6%

Perché qui: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Perché qui: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Perché qui: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.

Stick feel

StickFeel · Trim feel enabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Retained for compatibility and group membership. Trim relief, rather than this flag, controls centre movement.

StickFeel · Trim relief enabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Allows trim relief with supported control law and valid telemetry. Axis authorities set its amount.

StickFeel · Force trim enabledFalse

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Enables local force trim, separate from aircraft-owned trim and add-on integration qualification.

StickFeel · G load enabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Allows load-factor changes to modify permitted spring laws. Passive fly-by-wire feel can suppress it.

StickFeel · Rate damping enabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Enables rate damping with the configured coefficients and control law.

Autopilot

Autopilot · Follow enabledFalse

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Autopilot following is off; the configured spring and load retain the hardware feel.

Autopilot · Neutral hold enabledFalse

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Permits centering hold during a supported AP state, separate from following a moving target.

Autopilot · Neutral hold strength0.6

Perché qui: Sets admitted AP neutral-hold strength; inactive while neutral hold is disabled.

Aero

Aero · EnabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Enables aerodynamic cues; each still needs nonzero strength and its simulator conditions.

Aero · Max flap index3

Where this effect reaches full strength (or has fully faded, for washouts).

Più: a more gradual build to a later peak.

Meno: a quicker build.

Perché qui: Sets the final flap index for detent normalization. UP plus three detents uses maximum index3.

Aero · Min flap index2

Where this effect begins fading in.

Più: the effect begins later.

Meno: it begins earlier.

Perché qui: Sets the first flap detent that admits buffet; this is a handle index, not degrees.

Aero · Shaker enabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Permits shaker at supported warning conditions; the switch does not establish aircraft equipment.

Ground

Ground · EnabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Enables ground effects; each still needs its own strength and contact or motion telemetry.

Engine

Engine · EnabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.
