From fixed gear to the Super Skymaster

Cessna introduced the fixed-gear 336 in 1963, then announced the retractable-gear 337 Super Skymaster in late 1964. The turbocharged, pressurised P337 followed for the 1973 model year. These versions share the push-pull arrangement, but their engines, equipment and operating contexts differ.

Development milestones

Skymaster family first flight: 28 February 1961. This is the family’s initial-flight milestone, including the earlier 336 generation; the retractable-gear 337 followed later.

Long hours over the water, then a whale appears

Heikkila and Paul describe days that alternate between patient searching and concentrated activity. Their two-pilot crew follows survey lines over the ocean with two researchers in the cabin. When a possible sighting interrupts the routine, the pilots leave the track and hand-fly circles while the observers photograph and record what they see. Holding those turns accurately for extended periods is demanding work.

The shared hours have also made the crew friends. The pilots learned the language of whale research, while the observers learned more about flying. Paul recalls the pleasure of seeing a huge animal emerge from what had seemed like an empty sea, and the quiet of looking out over sparkling water. Both pilots found meaning in work that helped local conservation efforts and occasionally supported a rescue from the air.

An aircraft he kept coming back to

Lillie had owned several Skymasters and kept returning to the type. His flying included trips between Salt Lake City and Lake Powell, business use and visits to his fishing boat in British Columbia. Crossing remote and mountainous country influenced his choice of aircraft, and an engine failure followed by a return landing strengthened his personal attachment to the Skymaster.

For his fifth example, he renewed the soundproofing, windows and interior but retained much of the existing radio equipment. He preferred a panel that suited his needs to an expensive transformation, adding portable-style electronic displays on the yokes. In the interview, he was already open to owning another. His enthusiasm belongs to an experienced owner’s particular missions and aircraft, including their modifications and maintenance history.

Learning to question confident advice

Peasley was a young airline second officer grateful for charter work when he found the Skymaster’s battery dead before a passenger pickup. He accepted his chief pilot’s assurance that he could get going despite the problem. The resulting departure left him airborne with the rear engine repeatedly stopping and little ability to climb, turning an ordinary positioning flight into an alarming struggle.

He eventually restored power, reached the pickup airport and concealed the episode from the waiting passengers. By the end of the day, the chief pilot promised to replace the battery, but Peasley had learned a more lasting lesson about treating someone’s seniority as proof of sound judgment. Writing three decades later, he still remembered how close that decision had brought him to a forced landing.

The Skymaster places its engines on the aircraft centreline, with the rear propeller between twin tail booms. That layout makes it immediately recognizable beside conventional twins with wing-mounted engines. The military O-2 developed from the 337. This page keeps the civil Skymaster identity while retaining the scope of photographed and documented variants.

This starting point selects Cessna 337 Skymaster. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is enabled for supported control references.

Controls and trim

The Skymaster puts its piston engines on the centreline, one pulling and one pushing between the tail booms. Carenado's C337H documentation separates electric cowl-flap operation from wing flaps and identifies elevator and rudder trim wheels. Thranda supplies its own DGS/DynaFeel implementation. The opposing propellers' torque context does not require zero modeled propwash or identical engine cues.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Perché qui: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength74%

Perché qui: The selected reversible yoke response is independent of the push-pull engines; opposing propeller torque is not a control-force calibration. The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 70 KIAS.

C337H MSFS2020 – CarenadoC337H Normal and Emergency Procedures PDF2-3; rendered pages inspectedCessna C337 Skymaster DGS series XP12 / 11
Spring deadband4%

Perché qui: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load80%

Perché qui: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.8 with an indicated-speed reference of 140 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Perché qui: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor50%

Perché qui: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start19.6 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full70.0 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Perché qui: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Perché qui: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 70 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Perché qui: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load72%

Perché qui: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.72 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Perché qui: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Perché qui: Elevator trim supports pitch relief, while the documented rudder trim remains a yaw function rather than an aileron-trim response. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

C337H MSFS2020 – CarenadoC337H Normal and Emergency Procedures PDF2-3; rendered pages inspectedCessna C337 Skymaster DGS series XP12 / 11
Trim relief (aileron)0%

Perché qui: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble40%

Perché qui: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Perché qui: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet35%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Perché qui: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet10%

Perché qui: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Perché qui: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump65%

Perché qui: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Perché qui: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Perché qui: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Perché qui: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Perché qui: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.

Stick feel

StickFeel · Trim feel enabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Retained for compatibility and group membership. Trim relief, rather than this flag, controls centre movement.

StickFeel · Trim relief enabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Allows trim relief with supported control law and valid telemetry. Axis authorities set its amount.

StickFeel · Force trim enabledFalse

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

StickFeel · Rate damping enabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Enables rate damping with the configured coefficients and control law.

Autopilot

Autopilot · Follow enabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Following is on at 0.1 authority when a supported, valid autopilot control reference is available.

Autopilot · Neutral hold enabledFalse

Perché qui: Permits centering hold during a supported AP state, separate from following a moving target.

Autopilot · Neutral hold strength0.6

Perché qui: Sets admitted AP neutral-hold strength; inactive while neutral hold is disabled.

Aero

Aero · EnabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Enables aerodynamic cues; each still needs nonzero strength and its simulator conditions.

Aero · Max flap index3

Where this effect reaches full strength (or has fully faded, for washouts).

Più: a more gradual build to a later peak.

Meno: a quicker build.

Perché qui: Sets the final flap index for detent normalization. UP plus three detents uses maximum index3.

Aero · Min flap index2

Where this effect begins fading in.

Più: the effect begins later.

Meno: it begins earlier.

Perché qui: Sets the first flap detent that admits buffet; this is a handle index, not degrees.

Aero · Shaker enabledFalse

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Permits shaker at supported warning conditions; the switch does not establish aircraft equipment.

Ground

Ground · EnabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Perché qui: Enables ground effects; each still needs its own strength and contact or motion telemetry.

Engine

Engine · EnabledTrue

Whether this feature is active in this profile.
