The EPX grows from a long utility lineage

Charles places the 412EPX within the Huey, 212 and 412 family. Bell and Subaru’s development work for Japan’s UH-2 also produced changes offered in the civil EPX, connecting a familiar airframe lineage with a newer programme.

Familiar Huey roots and a long trip home

Charles felt at home in the 412EPX after earlier Huey flying, although the mix of familiar switches and newer displays still offered discoveries. Greg Maitlen accompanied the Arizona demonstration, which included photography, a mountain landing and a simulated engine failure. Bright sunlight made some autopilot buttons difficult to read, and Charles initially used more pedal movement than the helicopter needed.

The introduction continued with a lengthy ferry to Colorado. Mountain winds gave him another reason to appreciate the autopilot, while the absence of the optional fuel-flow display was something he noticed during the journey. By the end of the day, familiarity had grown into affection. His report balances that response with small cockpit frustrations and the conditions of the particular aircraft he flew.

A dark landing site leaves a lasting memory

A nighttime medical call brought McClendon and two nurses towards a road accident in rain showers. Information about obstacles at the proposed landing site was uncertain, and the urgency surrounding the patient added pressure. When the helicopter’s lights revealed power lines, he abandoned the approach and reconsidered how to reach the scene.

After landing, McClendon spoke with the firefighter who had been helping on the ground. The encounter changed the tone of his memory: the man was wet, tired and doing unfamiliar work under difficult circumstances. McClendon remained shaken by how close the approach had come to the wires. His recollection focuses on incomplete communication and the people involved, preserving the discomfort of the event without turning the eventual approach into a technique to copy.

A night flight exposes a problem in the organisation

McClendon joined a programme where the chief pilot discouraged autopilot use, despite the Bell 412 having the equipment installed. Having used automation in other aircraft, he studied the manual and explored the system in clear weather. The experience made him question the assumptions that had kept it out of routine use.

Later, on a return flight around three in the morning, deteriorating visibility led him to use an instrument approach to an airport and arrange an ambulance transfer. Afterwards he concealed the autopilot use from his chief pilot, a detail that exposes the organisation’s poor climate for discussing experience. This is a different event from his power-line recollection.

X-Plane 12X-Plane 11

The 412 developed from Bell's 212, replacing the earlier main-rotor arrangement with a composite four-blade system. The airframe found both civilian and military customers, and later versions introduced further cockpit and equipment changes. It belongs to the wider Huey family but has its own rotor, performance and systems context.

This starting point selects Bell 412. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Local force trim is off. Autopilot following is off.

Cyclic damping is on. Its configured gain is 0.35; it resists hardware motion separately from the spring and aircraft stabilization.

Controls and trim

X-Trident describes its Bell 412 as a twin-turbine, four-blade helicopter on skids, with hydraulic, electrical and fuel systems and a custom four-channel autopilot. Its many modes belong to the aircraft's own guidance logic. Older improvement notes do not establish the units or meaning of a current servo target, and disabled Bridge following does not mean the add-on lacks an AFCS.

Bell 412

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

A escala final de saída aplicada a tudo que o modelo produz, antes do teto do dispositivo.

Mais: tudo (mola, cargas, efeitos) fica mais forte junto.

Menos: tudo amacia junto.

Por que aqui: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength0%

Por que aqui: The configured cyclic centre and damping provide nominal resistance for the selected four-bladed helicopter, separate from its guidance modes. The baseline spring is 0. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 60 KIAS.

Bell 412
Spring deadband2%

Por que aqui: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load35%

Por que aqui: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.35 with an indicated-speed reference of 120 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Por que aqui: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor100%

Por que aqui: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start16.8 kt

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full60.0 kt

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed0%

Zero removes this high-speed increase.

Centre stiffening cap5

Menos: o endurecimento corta antes.

Por que aqui: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load100%

Por que aqui: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 1 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Por que aqui: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Por que aqui: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps0%

Por que aqui: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet0%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Por que aqui: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump50%

Por que aqui: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Por que aqui: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble6%

Por que aqui: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion0%

Por que aqui: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority5%

Por que aqui: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
