A long-imagined aircraft becomes the journey to Oshkosh

Savage’s interest began with admiration for an aircraft he had seen in a hangar. Years of research and anticipation eventually led to ownership. Flying it to Oshkosh gave that ambition a practical expression: a journey that took much of a day by road became a few hours accompanied by the radial engine’s distinctive sound.

He valued comfortable travel more than extracting the highest possible speed. The aircraft also made even an ordinary arrival a public occasion, with cameras appearing as the engine announced its presence. After putting it away, he would sometimes stop and take another photograph himself.

The busy panel becomes a rewarding travelling companion

The writer recognised how discouraging the Spartan’s many controls could look to someone used to a simpler aeroplane. During the first climb, sorting out the cockpit could consume enough attention that the airport slipped several miles behind. Once settled, the aircraft’s steady ride and responsive handling made it much easier to appreciate.

Approach and landing supplied another surprise: the aircraft could descend much more steeply than the pilot’s familiar visual judgement suggested. The report liked its final landing feel while noting the care required with the limited forward view.

A working aircraft becomes a cherished visitor to fly-ins

Hartness rescued a Spartan that had spent years abandoned and damaged. A comprehensive restoration, including replacement of its skin, brought it back to flying condition in 1974. In the years that followed, he used the Executive in his business before gradually making it an aircraft he flew for pleasure.

By the time of Davisson’s report, Hartness described a quieter stage of its life, visiting fly-ins and taking special trips. His affection had survived decades of ownership, and he wanted the aircraft to remain at Triple Tree.

Spartan built the 7W Executive in the late 1930s and early 1940s for private and business flying. Its enclosed cabin, all-metal fuselage and retractable landing gear were features of the design. Surviving aircraft remain in the photographic record.

This profile selects iniBuilds Spartan 7W Executive for MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024.

The mechanical linkage motivates reversible transport loading. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

The screw-driven elevator tab supplies pitch trim independently of vacuum flaps. Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The Spartan uses pushrod/cable elevator control and chain/cable/pushrod ailerons. A non-reversing screw drives its cable-operated elevator tab. Vacuum circuits separately operate wing and centre flaps, while electric gear has an emergency handcrank.

The selected implementation

iniBuilds’ Spartan offers classic, modern Garmin and hybrid cockpit/cabin combinations. The historical aircraft uses manual linkage and an electrically driven landing gear with an emergency handcrank.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Perché qui: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength74%

Perché qui: The mechanical linkage motivates reversible transport loading. The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 75 KIAS.

iniBuilds Spartan7W official productExecutive-Reference-Manual.pdfSpartan1.0.5 trim/belly flap changesSpartan real-aircraft reference provenance
Spring deadband4%

Perché qui: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load80%

Perché qui: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.8 with an indicated-speed reference of 140 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Perché qui: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor55%

Perché qui: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start25 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full75 kt

Perché qui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Perché qui: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Perché qui: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 75 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Perché qui: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load75%

Perché qui: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.75 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Perché qui: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Perché qui: The screw-driven elevator tab supplies pitch trim independently of vacuum flaps. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

iniBuilds Spartan7W official productExecutive-Reference-Manual.pdfSpartan1.0.5 trim/belly flap changesSpartan real-aircraft reference provenance
Trim relief (aileron)0%

Perché qui: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble40%

Perché qui: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Perché qui: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet35%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Perché qui: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Perché qui: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump65%

Perché qui: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Perché qui: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Perché qui: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Perché qui: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Perché qui: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.

Meno: a quicker build.

Perché qui: Sets the final flap index for detent normalization. UP plus three detents uses maximum index3.

Aero · Min flap index2

Where this effect begins fading in.

Più: the effect begins later.
