The B demonstrates vertical landing

Graham Tomlinson made the F-35B’s first vertical landing at Patuxent River on 18 March 2010. Shipboard vertical landings followed in October 2011, extending testing to the variant’s intended operating environment.

The vertical-landing test milestone

Lockheed Martin’s account follows Graham Tomlinson’s March 2010 test through a sustained hover at 150 feet and a touchdown at Patuxent River. That event demonstrated the B-model’s vertical-landing configuration after earlier flight testing, rather than describing a capability shared by all F-35s. The subsequent shipboard work brought the aircraft into a different test environment. These steps explain why the B deserves a separate operating description from the conventional-takeoff A and carrier C.

Vertical landing belongs to the B

The B variant redirects engine thrust and uses its lift system for short takeoff and vertical landing. That capability is variant-specific: the A-model dimensions and fuel figures above do not establish B-model hover performance.

About the values

Strengths are normalized hardware-feel settings. They set the effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its limits. The IAS reference is a tuning value.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

A escala final de saída aplicada a tudo que o modelo produz, antes do teto do dispositivo.

Mais: tudo (mola, cargas, efeitos) fica mais forte junto.

Menos: tudo amacia junto.

Por que aqui: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength52%

Por que aqui: This profile uses electronic-control centering for Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. The baseline spring is 0.52. Low-speed spring blending is off.

Spring deadband4%

Por que aqui: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load45%

Por que aqui: The stored 0.45 aerodynamic-load gain is inactive under the fixed-centre control law.

Airspeed blendingFalse

Por que aqui: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor55%

Por que aqui: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start10 kt

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full45 kt

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed0%

Zero removes this high-speed increase.

Centre stiffening cap2

Menos: o endurecimento corta antes.

Por que aqui: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load75%

Por que aqui: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.75 and 0.82, respectively. These stored weights do not create directed aerodynamic loading while that term is inactive. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load82%

Por que aqui: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)0%

Por que aqui: The profile uses the trim behaviour configured below. Pitch relief is off, with stored authority 0; roll authority is 0.

Trim relief (aileron)0%

Por que aqui: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps18%

Por que aqui: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet0%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Por que aqui: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump32%

Por que aqui: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Por que aqui: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble2%

Por que aqui: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion0%

Por que aqui: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Por que aqui: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
