Conheça o avião

The Beaver was developed around carrying practical loads into places with limited infrastructure. Its high wing and substantial doors suit passenger and cargo work, while wheels, skis and floats allow different operating environments. The familiar DHC-2 uses a nose-mounted radial engine.

Floatplane, wheeled and turbine-conversion Beavers have different equipment. Simulator documentation identifies the included configurations and any modern navigation or assistance systems.

Designed around Canada’s working airfields

De Havilland Canada developed the Beaver as a bush aircraft for wheels, skis and floats. Its first flight took place at Downsview on 16 August 1947. That choice of landing equipment became central to its work connecting places reached by water, snow or small airstrips.

The radial Beaver and the longer Turbo Beaver

Production of the original Beaver ended in 1967. De Havilland also built a turbine-powered version, the Turbo Beaver, with a longer cabin and increased payload. Pilot accounts of the radial aircraft should therefore keep their engine and airframe configuration attached when compared with later versions.

A first water landing leaves him wanting more

Hirschman’s first Beaver landing was on a Florida lake, with Wacker alongside and the radial engine rumbling ahead. The aircraft settled onto the water gently, and he immediately wanted another go. Its size had initially been the striking feature: reaching the cockpit took a climb, the door was narrow and the view from the high seat needed getting used to.

Once airborne, he was surprised by how light and responsive it felt. Repeated lake landings led into a long photography flight over the Atlantic, during which the time seemed to disappear. The amphibious equipment added its own study and cockpit checks. His enthusiasm came from discovering the finesse inside a large working aircraft, in a particular Beaver whose restoration and extensive modifications were part of the experience.

Reading the landscape from his working cockpit

Feeney describes a working day built around remembering the shape of the land. Before GPS guidance, fence posts, troughs, patches of scrub and distant landmarks helped him keep track of fertiliser runs. Moving from smaller aircraft to the Beaver made planning more demanding because each load covered more ground. Wind, slopes and the shape of a farm continually changed the task.

Although the flying was repetitive, he remembers fatigue more readily than boredom. From the cockpit he watched farmers, school buses and stock trucks go about their day while he learned the aircraft’s sounds and small changes in feel. He found the controls light and the cockpit comfortable. The affection comes with hindsight: he also acknowledged the narrow margins of those operations and the limits of his memory.

Four friends bring their Beaver home across the Atlantic

Aeberli and three fellow pilots chose to fly their newly restored Beaver home instead of shipping it in a container. They prepared during the rebuild, attended a transatlantic seminar and travelled with experienced instructor Werner Röschlau. Aeberli flew the first ocean leg, leaving Labrador behind with a cabin ferry tank and conventional radio navigation equipment.

The journey included an unsettling encounter with ice, several days waiting for better winds in Greenland and long hours watching the ocean pass below. Meals, music and conversations with helpful airline crews became part of the memory. Arrival in Iceland brought evening colours and rainbows; arrival at their Swiss base brought family, friends and champagne. He remembers both the scale of the crossing and the bond it created among the four travellers.

DHC-2 Beaver - DGS Series XP12

About the values

Strengths are normalized hardware-feel settings. They set the effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its limits. The IAS reference is a tuning value.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

A escala final de saída aplicada a tudo que o modelo produz, antes do teto do dispositivo.

Mais: tudo (mola, cargas, efeitos) fica mais forte junto.

Menos: tudo amacia junto.

Por que aqui: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength74%

Por que aqui: This profile uses reversible-control loading for De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver. The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 50 KIAS.

Overall aerodynamic load80%

Por que aqui: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.8 with an indicated-speed reference of 100 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Elevator load100%

Por que aqui: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Aileron load74%

Por que aqui: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.74 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Spring deadband4%

Por que aqui: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Por que aqui: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor50%

Por que aqui: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start8 kt

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full50.0 kt

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Por que aqui: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 50 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Menos: o endurecimento corta antes.

Por que aqui: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Por que aqui: The profile uses the trim behaviour configured below. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

Trim relief (aileron)0%

Por que aqui: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Por que aqui: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet35%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Por que aqui: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump65%

Por que aqui: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Por que aqui: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Por que aqui: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Por que aqui: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Por que aqui: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
