Shared ownership brings several kinds of flying together

Koch’s 2017 report describes the SW121 shared by Melanie and Frank Demelius and professor Rudolf Mathar. Their aircraft served personal travel and glider towing, with ownership connecting people whose professional lives otherwise kept them in different places.

A radio fumble gives way to an evening’s flying

Unwin’s photographic flight began less smoothly than he would have liked. While trying to coordinate with the EuroFox carrying the photographer, he fumbled the radio’s frequency transfer and provoked some impatience from the other aircraft. Deepak Mahajan’s compliment about professional flying left him privately amused by the contrast with his own performance.

Later, softer evening air made holding formation easier and allowed the photographic work to go more comfortably. With that finished, Unwin and Mahajan had time to enjoy the surroundings, visiting the views around Belvoir Castle and Harlaxton Manor. They returned for touch-and-goes with the airfield quiet.

An owner shares her aircraft, then supplies the glider tow

Melanie Demelius introduced Koch to the aircraft she shared with Frank Demelius and Rudolf Mathar. Her airline background showed in an orderly approach to the checklist, something Koch recognised from his own professional flying. After she made the departure, he took the controls and enjoyed the Virus’s responsive turns, while finding the flap lever less convenient for his elbow.

The visit then changed aircraft and perspective. Koch moved into the front seat of an ASK 21 with Frank behind him, while Melanie used the Virus to tow them airborne. The owners’ hospitality let him experience two sides of their flying: first handling the powered aircraft, then watching it work ahead of a glider. The tow leg was Melanie’s Virus flight, with Koch flying the glider.

The view compensates for somewhere awkward to keep a snack

Lyons particularly liked the view through the Virus’s glazed doors and over its short nose. Having mainly flown low-wing aircraft, he appreciated the different connection with the landscape below. For him, the attraction of a travelling aeroplane included being able to enjoy what passed outside, as well as reaching the destination.

A smaller detail was less welcome: the baggage compartment could not be reached from the cockpit. He was accustomed to retrieving a water bottle or snack from behind the seats and found the change frustrating until he adjusted. His review also describes responsive controls with comparatively heavier roll effort. Those personal preferences give practical texture to his enthusiasm without establishing a particular journey or flight-test programme.

MSFS 2024MSFS 2020

Pipistrel developed the Virus family in Slovenia around a lightweight high-wing airframe, fixed landing gear and enclosed side-by-side two-seat cockpit. Versions have been supplied under different light-aircraft categories and construction arrangements.

This starting point selects Pipistrel Virus SW 121. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

The profile supplies selected light-aircraft stick resistance. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Pitch relief stays with the SW121 profile’s trim authority. Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The Virus SW121 is a specific light-aircraft configuration with an enclosed side-by-side cockpit and fixed gear. Its wing, engine and instruments retain their own model scope within Pipistrel’s wider Virus programme.

Pipistrel Virus

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

A escala final de saída aplicada a tudo que o modelo produz, antes do teto do dispositivo.

Mais: tudo (mola, cargas, efeitos) fica mais forte junto.

Menos: tudo amacia junto.

Por que aqui: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength74%

The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 52.5 KIAS.

Pipistrel Virus
Spring deadband4%

Por que aqui: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load80%

Por que aqui: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.8 with an indicated-speed reference of 105 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Por que aqui: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor50%

Por que aqui: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start14.7 kt

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full52.5 kt

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Por que aqui: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Por que aqui: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 52.5 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Menos: o endurecimento corta antes.

Por que aqui: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load72%

Por que aqui: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.72 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Por que aqui: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Por que aqui: Pitch relief stays with the SW121 profile’s trim authority. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

Pipistrel Virus
Trim relief (aileron)0%

Por que aqui: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Por que aqui: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet35%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Por que aqui: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Por que aqui: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Por que aqui: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump65%

Por que aqui: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Por que aqui: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Por que aqui: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Por que aqui: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Por que aqui: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
