Returning to the 707 when an airline career disappeared

De la Torre recalls the shock of losing an established airline job and returning to the 707 after several years away from it. A cargo position offered a way back into flying, but the unfamiliar avionics and an uncomfortable first approach reminded him how much had to be relearned. Ground school and simulator work restored some confidence, while the new operation took him across the Americas and the Atlantic.

One memorable assignment carried cattle from Germany to Brazil, turning the freighter into a very distinctive workplace. The work could also stretch far beyond the trip he had packed for: he remembers leaving home for five days and returning three months later. Eventually his growing concern about operating conditions outweighed the attraction of the pay. He describes leaving the 707 in December 1996 for an A320 first-officer position and a lower salary.

Learning an airline cockpit from the seat behind the captain

On his first transcontinental 707 flight, Schiff sat behind the captain, working out groundspeed with a circular flight computer. The headwind seemed extraordinary to someone arriving from general aviation, and he thought he should report it. The captain’s dismissive response became a lasting memory of how humbling the junior seat could be in that era.

Schiff balances that story with appreciation for the many captains who shared the flying and helped first officers develop. What impressed him most was the airline’s training: two pilots who had never met could enter the cockpit already knowing their respective duties and work smoothly together. His retrospective is as much about learning when and how to speak as it is about learning an aircraft, and about the influence senior crewmembers have on those following them.

What an emergency taught him about the cabin crew

Hutchinson joined BOAC’s 707 fleet in 1966 after military and corporate flying. In his later interview, he recalls an otherwise settled early airline career interrupted by the April 1968 fire shortly after departure from Heathrow. With a route check taking place, he was in a rear cockpit seat. He remembers the urgency of compressing the normal phases of a flight and the emergency work into the few minutes before landing.

The evacuation left an especially strong impression. Hutchinson describes guarding an unusable exit and watching the cabin crew work under extreme pressure. The experience reinforced his understanding of their central role in protecting passengers. His recollection is not accompanied by an independent accident investigation.

MSFS 2024MSFS 2020

The 707 developed from Boeing's 367-80 demonstrator and entered airline service in 1958. Its swept wing carried four podded engines, while the cabin used a six-abreast cross-section that influenced later Boeing narrow-bodies. Several fuselage, wing and engine developments followed.

This starting point selects Boeing 707-320C. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

The profile supplies selected powered-transport yoke resistance. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Pitch trim response is separate from cargo configuration and engineer duties. Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is enabled for supported control references.

Controls and trim

The 707 developed from the 367-80 demonstrator and entered airline service in 1958. The convertible -320C retains a flight-engineer station, passenger/cargo equipment and an early jet-transport cockpit around its swept-wing airframe.

Boeing 707-320C Manual

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Por qué aquí: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength70%

Por qué aquí: The profile supplies selected powered-transport yoke resistance. The baseline spring is 0.7. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 90 KIAS.

Boeing 707-320C Manual
Spring deadband4%

Por qué aquí: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load25%

Por qué aquí: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.25 with an indicated-speed reference of 265 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Por qué aquí: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor55%

Por qué aquí: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start20 kt

Por qué aquí: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full90 kt

Por qué aquí: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Por qué aquí: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed0%

Por qué aquí: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0. No additional speed-driven stiffening is added; this does not disable independent aerodynamic loading.

Centre stiffening cap5

Por qué aquí: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load55%

Por qué aquí: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.55 and 0.6, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load60%

Por qué aquí: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Menos: sigues sosteniendo esfuerzo aun compensado.

Por qué aquí: Pitch trim response is separate from cargo configuration and engineer duties. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.09.

Boeing 707-320C Manual
Trim relief (aileron)9%

Por qué aquí: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble40%

Por qué aquí: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps32%

Por qué aquí: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet30%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet22%

Por qué aquí: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Por qué aquí: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet10%

Por qué aquí: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker90%

Por qué aquí: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump90%

Por qué aquí: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble50%

Por qué aquí: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble6%

Por qué aquí: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Por qué aquí: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Por qué aquí: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
