Hughes OH-6 / 500

A small observation-helicopter family with a rounded cabin and compact rotor system.
Helicopter9 choix de profil

Connaître l'avion

Hughes developed the compact, single-turbine OH-6 for the US Army's Light Observation Helicopter programme. Its reconnaissance and utility roles were followed by the civilian Hughes 500 lineage.

Engines, rotors and equipment changed across the OH-6 and 500 family. Taog's simulator package offers skid and float configurations and documents electric cyclic trim; it does not describe that trim as a full automatic flight-control system.

The factory is part of the aircraft’s continuing story

Huling’s 2023 visit describes hand-built fuselages and tail booms alongside a leadership team working to restore customer support after a change of ownership. His report captures a particular period in the production history of the civilian MD500 family.

Returning to a favourite after more than twenty years

A television helicopter had helped inspire Huling’s interest, but his factory visit also showed the people building the aircraft by hand. Four new helicopters were on the production line during a period when the company was trying to rebuild customer support and confidence. Flying one afterward gave him a more personal reason to enjoy the visit.

His initial hover needed a few corrections before the feel returned. Banks then guided him into the desert for an off-airport landing, including a reminder to shed the habits of fixed-wing approaches. Huling appreciated the visibility through the newer, narrower instrument panel and later joined a separate photo flight.

A factory visit renews an instructor’s attachment to the type

Andrykowsky made a long drive to Arizona for time with Dennis Banks, whose familiarity with the aircraft impressed him as much as the flying. Practising autorotations in the desert was far removed from the author’s ordinary day, and he openly admitted a strong affection for the MD500 before offering his assessment.

That attachment had begun with a conversion course among law-enforcement pilots in California. He remembered being the only participant without a sidearm, a small detail that captured the unusual company in which he was learning. In describing later flying, he valued direct control response and the sense of being closely connected to the aircraft. He also acknowledged its cramped, noisy cabin. The account supplies an instructor’s enthusiastic experience, while its broader technical comparisons remain separate from verified specifications.

A flight-test student finds a demanding subject

Sparkes first encountered the MD500 as a test-pilot student expected to produce a detailed report after only an hour of flying. Kenyon’s knowledge allowed him to explore a broad range of handling within the school’s programme. The small airframe and generous cockpit view made an immediate impression, followed by controls more responsive than he had expected.

Hovering required close attention, and the aircraft continued to challenge his coordination in forward flight. Some changes in attitude and rotor behaviour caught him by surprise, giving him plenty to analyse afterward. Returning for low-speed work remained enjoyable despite the effort. The helicopter later reappeared during his time commanding the school.

Hughes OH-6A

Free + Pro
MSFS 2020MSFS 2024X-Plane 11X-Plane 12

Hughes developed the compact, single-turbine OH-6 for the US Army's Light Observation Helicopter programme. Its reconnaissance and utility roles were followed by the civilian Hughes 500 lineage.

This starting point selects Hughes OH-6A. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

The selected cyclic resistance accompanies the exact rotor/control configuration. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load. Cyclic damping adds resistance to hardware motion.

Electric trim and SAS release remain separate from a hardware spring latch. Local force trim holds the selected hardware centre. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

Hughes/MD 500 variants use different rotor and equipment fits. The reviewed 500E has five main blades; the MSFS 2024 OH-6 package describes four blades, adjustable friction and electric cyclic trim without hydraulic boost. SAS and trim-release functions are implementation-specific.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Pourquoi ici : Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength0%

Pourquoi ici : The selected cyclic resistance accompanies the exact rotor/control configuration. The baseline spring is 0. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 55 KIAS.

User ManualCowanSim HeloSAS autopilot manualUser ManualSAS ManualDownload manual
Spring deadband2%

Pourquoi ici : Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load35%

Pourquoi ici : The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.35 with an indicated-speed reference of 110 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Pourquoi ici : Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor100%

Pourquoi ici : Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start15.4 kt

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full55.0 kt

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed0%

Pourquoi ici : Adds permitted spring resistance above the full-blend speed. Zero removes this high-speed increase.

Centre stiffening cap5

Pourquoi ici : Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load100%

Pourquoi ici : Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 1 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Pourquoi ici : Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Pourquoi ici : Caps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Pourquoi ici : Scales supported pitch-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes pitch response.

Trim relief (aileron)30%

Pourquoi ici : Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Pourquoi ici : Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump50%

Pourquoi ici : Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble6%

Pourquoi ici : Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority5%

Pourquoi ici : Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
