A working twin also carries the family on holiday

Caruso’s enthusiasm for the 404 came from years spent around the aircraft as a maintainer, seller and operator. His family business owned two, and its work gave him repeated opportunities to introduce buyers to the type. He compared its handling with a heavy 402C and emphasised the small throttle movements involved in managing the geared engines.

The aircraft also had a place in family life. Caruso recalled flying his family nonstop from Portland, Maine, to Key West, a trip that illustrated why he valued its combination of cabin space and carrying ability. His praise belongs to someone with a business interest in the aircraft, but the family journey gives that professional preference a personal setting.

An unexpected return ends with an instructor’s congratulations

Landreville remembers a winter evening when the regular service stopped at Roberval to collect more passengers. Shortly after the aircraft lifted off, the nose baggage door swung open. The crew returned through snow for an instrument approach, with Landreville worried about what might happen if the door broke away.

Back on the ground, they found no damage, secured the compartment and prepared to continue. One passenger made the relief particularly memorable: the head of the flight school where Landreville had trained was sitting behind him. His former instructor leaned forward to congratulate him, leaving the pilot grinning. The memoir preserves that personal ending while the account of the incident remains Landreville’s own recollection.

Gusty night conditions draw attention away from a familiar check

The commander was alone on a positioning flight and had substantial experience in the 404. Approaching at night in gusty conditions, he asked the controller for updated wind information twice. Only during the flare, as the aircraft contacted the runway, did he realise that the landing gear had not been lowered.

He was uninjured, but the aircraft was damaged. In the account submitted to the AAIB, he considered that attention to the gusty nighttime arrival had distracted him from the checklist and final gear check. The explanation is the pilot’s assessment of his own flight.

Cessna 404 Titan

Free + Pro
MSFS 2024

The Titan sits at the larger end of Cessna's piston-twin range. Its low wing carries two engines, while a substantial cabin supports passenger and freight configurations. It was developed during the 1970s and also appeared in military service under different designations.

This starting point selects Cessna 404 Titan. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is enabled for supported control references.

Controls and trim

The preserved C404 material describes retractable tricycle gear that is electrically controlled and hydraulically actuated. X-Hangar's Titan is a cabin-class piston twin with its own current manual, weather radar and audio revisions. These features identify configuration and product scope without establishing hydraulic primary controls or a multiple-engine hand-force scaling rule.

Exact product, simulator declarations and configuration featuresCurrent X-Hangar version updatesCessna 404 POH NTSB docket

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Pourquoi ici : Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength74%

Pourquoi ici : The nominal yoke response remains independent of electrically controlled hydraulic gear and of piston-engine count. The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 82.5 KIAS.

Exact product, simulator declarations and configuration featuresCurrent X-Hangar version updatesCessna 404 POH NTSB docket
Spring deadband4%

Pourquoi ici : Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load80%

Pourquoi ici : The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.8 with an indicated-speed reference of 165 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Pourquoi ici : Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor50%

Pourquoi ici : Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start20 kt

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full82.5 kt

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Pourquoi ici : The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 82.5 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Pourquoi ici : Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load72%

Pourquoi ici : Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.72 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Pourquoi ici : Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Pourquoi ici : Caps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Pourquoi ici : Pitch relief is a chosen software approximation; the gear description and developer change log do not quantify trim-to-yoke force. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

Exact product, simulator declarations and configuration featuresCurrent X-Hangar version updatesCessna 404 POH NTSB docket
Trim relief (aileron)0%

Pourquoi ici : Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble40%

Pourquoi ici : Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Pourquoi ici : Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet35%

Pourquoi ici : Sets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Pourquoi ici : Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet10%

Pourquoi ici : Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Pourquoi ici : Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump65%

Pourquoi ici : Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Pourquoi ici : Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Pourquoi ici : Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Pourquoi ici : Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
