A medium bomber with several wartime jobs

First flown in August 1940, the B-25 became widely known through the Doolittle Raid of April 1942. Its work extended well beyond that mission. Designed for bombing from medium altitude, Mitchells were also used for low-level attacks against airfields and shipping in the Pacific, with successive variants adapting the nose and weapons installation to those tasks.

Glass noses, solid noses and restored identities

The B-25J appeared with a transparent bombardier’s nose and in a solid-nose attack configuration. Those differences matter when comparing surviving aircraft and simulator versions. The museum’s own Doolittle display is an RB-25D rebuilt to represent the raid leader’s B-25B, illustrating why an aircraft’s displayed markings and its original production identity may differ.

Learning to work with Panchito

Haines arrived with experience in many aircraft and found the Mitchell surprisingly hard to fly gracefully. Taxiing was the first humbling lesson: small brake inputs produced abrupt changes, and observing fellow student Michael Horner did little to prepare him for trying it himself. Ground school and the walkaround made the machinery more familiar, while owner Larry Kelley’s explanations showed how much effort went into keeping Panchito flying.

In the air, Nuwer remained busy with engine settings and the many hydraulically operated systems. Haines felt the aircraft’s weight through heavy roll forces, accompanied by constant noise and vibration. The experience also made him think about the much younger crews who had flown wartime missions. His weekend brought a second-in-command endorsement and a stronger appreciation of both those crews and the volunteers preserving their aircraft.

The noise and physical work of an old bomber

Schiff visited a B-25 kept flying partly through instruction and donations. Owner Jim Terry’s attachment began with his uncle’s wartime stories, and the restored Pacific Prowler carried that family connection into the training programme. In the cockpit, Schiff found an orderly arrangement, but starting and taxiing still required coordinated hand movements and a particularly gentle approach to the brakes.

He remembers the Mitchell as exceptionally loud, with its engines close beside the cockpit. Heavy control forces made manoeuvring physical, although he found the aircraft responsive to deliberate handling. Landing smoothly brought another challenge: keeping the nosewheel from arriving too abruptly after the main wheels touched. Throughout the flight he imagined the crews who had operated the type in wartime, an emotional response to a modern instructional flight in a surviving aircraft.

The aircraft that changed his career

Fassold originally expected military training to lead to an airline career. Meeting the Mitchell at advanced flying school changed his plans: he liked it enough to join the permanent RCAF. He remembers moving from the dark access compartment into a bright cockpit with an excellent view, and feeling that the aircraft rewarded a pilot who understood what he wanted it to do.

Later postings gave that affection years of practical use. At Winnipeg he flew aircraft supporting airborne-interception training, then joined the VIP transport squadron in Ottawa. Taking senior officers flying sometimes meant managing much of the work from the right seat. The small Mitchell group also shared the grief of losing an aircraft and its occupants.

X-Plane 11

North American designed the B-25 Mitchell as a twin-engine medium bomber. Its name honours William Mitchell, an advocate for American military aviation. Multiple wartime versions carried different mission equipment. The simulator product identifies its represented version and simulator generation.

This starting point selects North American B-25 Mitchell. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Manual transport controls motivate sustained yoke resistance. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Pitch and roll trim have separate documented controls. Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The Mitchell documentation identifies trim on all three axes, hydraulic gear and a continuously moving flap selector that returns to neutral. Wing flaps and engine cowl flaps serve different systems. Modern GPS/AP equipment is separately described simulator equipment.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Por qué aquí: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength74%

The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 85 KIAS.

Aeroplane Heaven - You're virtually there.™ North American B-25J Mitchell for MSFS 2020 ( 2024 compatible )Original PDF pages 6,10-11B-25 Mitchell
Spring deadband4%

Por qué aquí: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load95%

Por qué aquí: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.95 with an indicated-speed reference of 170 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Por qué aquí: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor50%

Por qué aquí: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start20 kt

Por qué aquí: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full85.0 kt

Por qué aquí: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Por qué aquí: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed10%

Por qué aquí: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.1. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 85 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Por qué aquí: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load72%

Por qué aquí: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.72 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Por qué aquí: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Menos: sigues sosteniendo esfuerzo aun compensado.

Por qué aquí: Pitch and roll trim have separate documented controls. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.12.

Aeroplane Heaven - You're virtually there.™ North American B-25J Mitchell for MSFS 2020 ( 2024 compatible )Original PDF pages 6,10-11B-25 Mitchell
Trim relief (aileron)12%

Por qué aquí: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble42%

Por qué aquí: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps30%

Por qué aquí: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet35%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Por qué aquí: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Por qué aquí: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet10%

Por qué aquí: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Por qué aquí: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump75%

Por qué aquí: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Por qué aquí: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Por qué aquí: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Por qué aquí: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority5%

Por qué aquí: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
