Kenne das Flugzeug

The Challenger began with a Bill Lear concept taken forward by Canadair in the 1970s. Its broad cabin and supercritical wing were central parts of the design. Later ownership and development under Bombardier produced a long sequence of engine, avionics and cabin updates.

The Challenger 650 belongs to a much later generation than the original 600. Hot Start's simulator product represents that specific aircraft and its systems environment. The family photograph depicts a 604, whose equipment differs from the 650.

A familiar airframe adapted around its patients

Rega’s 2018 renewal replaced its CL-604s with three Challenger 650 ambulance jets. The selection preserved useful commonality while allowing investment in medical equipment, cabin lighting, soundproofing and patient loading. The organisation’s requirements extended well beyond the cockpit or the appearance of a business-jet cabin.

Bringing home a new ambulance jet

Nagel had brought Rega’s first Challenger 650 to Switzerland when he explained why the organisation had stayed with a familiar aircraft family. Outwardly, the new jet looked much like its predecessor. Inside, improved patient beds, loading equipment and cockpit technology reflected the detailed requirements of an air-ambulance operator.

Reliability mattered personally to the crew sent to collect someone far from home. Nagel pointed out that a medical flight could not simply transfer its passenger to another service if the aircraft became unavailable. Familiar equipment also eased training and spare-parts demands. He looked forward to using the new radar and communications equipment on everyday missions, with more direct journeys offering practical benefits for the people being brought back.

The first Challenger 650 arrival in Lugano

Flückiger and Nagel knew Lugano-Agno, but this arrival carried a new distinction: it was the first visit by Rega’s Challenger 650. Their flight from Vienna brought a patient home to Ticino. The short runway required careful preparation, while the cabin team readied their patient for landing.

As the jet descended between the hills, Nagel used the head-up display to keep flight information in view. HB-JWA touched down gently and stopped with runway remaining. The pilots’ work continued on the ground: Flückiger opened the exit and lowered the steps, then helped Nagel install the loading ramp. An ambulance arrived to complete the transfer, making the flight one part of a coordinated journey from one hospital to another.

Questioning an inherited way of doing the job

Albright had less than a year on the Challenger 604 when he was asked to test its air-driven generator. Colleagues found reasons to be elsewhere, and the pilot accompanying him agreed only if Albright would both command and fly the aircraft. That nervous reception encouraged him to examine the manufacturer’s procedure for himself.

He took time over the flight and found the actual test uneventful. Afterwards, he learned that his department had been doing it quickly in the traffic pattern. The contrast stayed with him. In his later essay, the experience became an example of how a familiar local practice could escape questioning simply because people had inherited it from those who came before.

Bombardier Challenger 650

Free + Pro
X-Plane 12X-Plane 11

The Challenger began with a Bill Lear concept taken forward by Canadair in the 1970s. Its broad cabin and supercritical wing were central parts of the design. Later ownership and development under Bombardier produced a long sequence of engine, avionics and cabin updates.

This starting point selects Bombardier Challenger 650. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is enabled for supported control references.

Controls and trim

Hot Start's Challenger 650 has its own X-Plane 12 systems. Its developer describes trim-dependent pitch input feel and advises disabling that add-on input-feel option for FFB controls. That option changes simulated input response; it does not publish an absolute force ratio or a calibrated hardware spring curve. Older Challenger-family material remains background rather than an exact 650 interface.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Warum hier: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength80%

Warum hier: The configured spring supplies hardware feel independently of Hot Start's optional input-feel transformation; the developer provides no calibrated force curve. The baseline spring is 0.8. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 90 KIAS.

Take Command! Hot Start Challenger 650
Spring deadband4%

Warum hier: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load25%

Warum hier: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.25 with an indicated-speed reference of 260 KIAS. The hydraulic-load factor of 0.35 scales that modeled term; it is a selected artificial-feel approximation.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Warum hier: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor55%

Warum hier: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start20 kt

Warum hier: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full90 kt

Warum hier: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Warum hier: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed0%

Warum hier: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0. No additional speed-driven stiffening is added; this does not disable independent aerodynamic loading.

Centre stiffening cap5

Warum hier: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load65%

Weniger: leichtere, quirligere Querruder.

Warum hier: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.65 and 0.65, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load65%

Warum hier: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Warum hier: Caps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Warum hier: Pitch response is trim-dependent in the documented input-feel option, but profile pressure relief is a separate chosen hardware approximation. Pitch authority 0.3 relieves permitted loading; hydraulic centre movement is off. Roll authority is 0.09.

Take Command! Hot Start Challenger 650
Trim relief (aileron)9%

Weniger: Rolltrimmung bewirkt weniger.

Warum hier: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble40%

Rollende Untergrundvibration aus Radgeschwindigkeit und Oberflächenart: die Textur von Asphalt, Gras oder Schotter unter dem Fahrwerk.

Mehr: lautere Oberflächentextur durch den Stick.

Weniger: ruhigeres Rollen.

Warum hier: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps32%

Weniger: weichere Bodendetails.

Warum hier: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet30%

Warum hier: Sets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet22%

Warum hier: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Weniger: ruhigere Anflugklappen.

Warum hier: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet10%

Warum hier: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker90%

Warum hier: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump90%

Warum hier: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble50%

Ausrollvibration bei Schubumkehr oder Beta-Verstellung. Null für Muster ohne Umkehr.

Mehr: ein rauerer Ausrollvorgang unter Umkehrschub.

Weniger: leisere Umkehr.

Warum hier: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble6%

Warum hier: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Warum hier: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Warum hier: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
