From race aircraft to experimental transport

After the MacRobertson Race, the museum’s 247-D returned to United service. The Smithsonian records its sale in 1937 for use as an executive transport, followed by a 1939 transfer to the Department of Commerce Air Safety Board. Fourteen years of experimental work earned it the nickname Adaptable Annie before its 1953 museum donation. Its display combines racing markings on one side with United markings on the other, reflecting two stages of that working life.

The D model adds useful distinctions

The 247-D introduced controllable-pitch propellers and wing de-icing boots. These are model-specific systems to look for in the chosen simulator. Propeller, icing and landing-gear cues should follow that implementation’s telemetry; the museum specification does not calibrate their joystick amplitudes.

About the values

Strengths are normalized hardware-feel settings. They set the effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its limits. The IAS reference is a tuning value.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Warum hier: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength74%

Warum hier: This profile uses reversible-control loading for Boeing 247-D. The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 45 KIAS.

Overall aerodynamic load80%

Warum hier: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.8 with an indicated-speed reference of 150 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Elevator load100%

Warum hier: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Aileron load72%

Weniger: leichtere, quirligere Querruder.

Warum hier: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.72 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Max output force55%

Warum hier: Caps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Warum hier: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Spring deadband4%

Warum hier: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Warum hier: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor55%

Warum hier: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start10 kt

Warum hier: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full45 kt

Warum hier: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Warum hier: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 45 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Warum hier: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Warum hier: The profile uses the trim behaviour configured below. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.16.

Trim relief (aileron)16%

Weniger: Rolltrimmung bewirkt weniger.

Warum hier: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble40%

Rollende Untergrundvibration aus Radgeschwindigkeit und Oberflächenart: die Textur von Asphalt, Gras oder Schotter unter dem Fahrwerk.

Mehr: lautere Oberflächentextur durch den Stick.

Weniger: ruhigeres Rollen.

Warum hier: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Weniger: weichere Bodendetails.

Warum hier: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Flap buffet0%

Weniger: ruhigere Anflugklappen.

Warum hier: Flap cues remain disabled. Engine and gear-motion scaling are estimates; the electrical gear system does not establish powered primary flight controls.

Stall buffet35%

Warum hier: Sets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Warum hier: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Gear buffet0%

Warum hier: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Warum hier: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Flap motion0%

Warum hier: Flap cues remain disabled. Engine and gear-motion scaling are estimates; the electrical gear system does not establish powered primary flight controls.

Engine rumble12%

Warum hier: Flap cues remain disabled. Engine and gear-motion scaling are estimates; the electrical gear system does not establish powered primary flight controls.

Touchdown thump65%

Warum hier: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Ausrollvibration bei Schubumkehr oder Beta-Verstellung. Null für Muster ohne Umkehr.

Mehr: ein rauerer Ausrollvorgang unter Umkehrschub.

Weniger: leisere Umkehr.

Warum hier: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Warum hier: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.

Mechanical

Mechanical · Gain0.025

The strength of this effect.

Mehr: a stronger effect.

Weniger: a weaker one.

Warum hier: Flap cues remain disabled. Engine and gear-motion scaling are estimates; the electrical gear system does not establish powered primary flight controls.
