A windy Florida flight includes a very public landing

Wischmeyer’s flight with Steve Bensinger began on a bumpy grass strip and climbed into smoother air over the Lakeland area. The light controls and yaw string gave the Hawk something of a sailplane’s character, while the wide view made the changing landscape below part of the pleasure. Strong winds shaped the exercise despite the smooth air.

After Bensinger demonstrated a landing, Wischmeyer tried his own and found the aircraft manageable through a thermal and wind shear. Returning to the fly-in brought spectators and a crosswind into the picture. He ballooned during the flare, then recovered to a gentle touchdown.

An instructor renewal becomes a memorable outing

Martin’s memories of the Hawk included a flight with its designer, Chuck Slusarczyk, in gusty conditions near Cleveland. The outing had a practical purpose as well as the pleasure of flying together: Slusarczyk needed his student-pilot solo endorsement renewed, and Martin could provide the instruction. The weather gave them a useful chance to see the aeroplane at work.

The approach and landing left Martin impressed with what Slusarczyk and the little two-seater could do in those conditions. His recollection retains the humour of the exchange surrounding the endorsement, placing the designer’s personality alongside the aircraft’s handling. It is a glimpse of the people behind an established design, remembered within a wider account of inexpensive sport flying.

An owner would gladly have his old Hawk back

The owner posting as Wagondriver remembered building a Hawk Arrow 2 and flying it for 234 hours before a move prompted its sale. He had operated from a high-country hayfield and adapted the aircraft for the kind of flying he enjoyed, including using skis. Years later, he said he would like to have it back.

His answer to a maintenance question mixed affection with practical experience. Routine ownership had seemed manageable to him, but storage mattered: reflected sunlight damaged fabric enough to require replacement wing sails. His modifications and local flying conditions concern that individual aircraft.

CGS Hawk Arrow II

Free + Pro
MSFS 2024

Chuck Slusarczyk developed the Hawk from his experience with hang gliders and early powered ultralights. The engine and propeller sit behind the cabin, leaving the view ahead unobstructed. The family includes both single-seat and tandem two-seat aircraft.

This starting point selects CGS Hawk Arrow II. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The Arrow II guide describes a pusher aircraft with three-axis controls, a Rotax 912, fixed-pitch propeller and alternative fixed undercarriages. A two-position flap switch is documented. It is the tandem two-seat Hawk development, so a single-seat family photograph or an alternative gear layout does not establish the selected simulator configuration's exact behavior.

CGS Hawk Arrow II

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Wzmocnienie główne i układ sterowania

Master gain85%

Końcowy, ogólny mnożnik wyjścia stosowany do wszystkiego, co wytwarza model, przed ograniczeniem urządzenia.

Więcej: wszystko (sprężyna, obciążenia, efekty) staje się silniejsze jednocześnie.

Mniej: wszystko jednocześnie łagodnieje.

Dlaczego tutaj: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Siły

Spring strength64%

Dlaczego tutaj: The selected stick resistance is nominal reversible loading for the two-seat pusher, independent of gear-layout and engine cues. The baseline spring is 0.64. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 30 KIAS.

CGS Hawk Arrow II
Spring deadband4%

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load80%

Profile zwykle zostawiają go bez zmian i zamiast tego dostrajają oba obciążenia osi.

Więcej: obie osie są mocniej obciążone.

Mniej: obie osie jednocześnie stają się lżejsze.

Dlaczego tutaj: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.8 with an indicated-speed reference of 60 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Dlaczego tutaj: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor50%

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start8.4 kt

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full30.0 kt

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Prędkość dostrajania siły60

Prędkość przyrządowa, przy której obciążenie aerodynamiczne osiąga zakładany pełny poziom. Zakotwicza całą krzywą obciążenia w rzeczywistym zakresie prędkości statku powietrznego: 172 nabiera pełnego obciążenia do 110 węzłów, odrzutowiec znacznie później.

Więcej: obciążenia pojawiają się później; drążek pozostaje lekki do wyższej prędkości.

Mniej: obciążenia pojawiają się wcześniej, a przelot wydaje się cięższy.

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Dlaczego tutaj: The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 30 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Dlaczego tutaj: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load60%

Dlaczego tutaj: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.6 and 0.78, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load78%

Dlaczego tutaj: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Dlaczego tutaj: Caps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trymer

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Dlaczego tutaj: Pitch relief remains a selected software response; the acquired configuration description does not quantify a physical trim-force curve. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

CGS Hawk Arrow II
Trim relief (aileron)0%

Dlaczego tutaj: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Wzmocnienia efektów · Podłoże

Runway rumble40%

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Krótkie, pojedyncze wstrząsy od szczelin dylatacyjnych, kolein i nierównej nawierzchni, przerywające ciągłe wibracje.

Więcej: ostrzejsze uderzenia od szczelin i kolein.

Mniej: łagodniejsze szczegóły nawierzchni.

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Wzmocnienia efektów · Płatowiec

Stall buffet35%

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Niskoczęstotliwościowe wibracje płatowca przy klapach wypuszczonych w strumień powietrza, w zakresie prędkości, w którym faktycznie pracują w opływie.

Więcej: mniej spokojny lot przy klapach pracujących w opływie.

Mniej: spokojniejsze klapy w podejściu.

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Mniej: czystszy lot z wypuszczonym podwoziem.

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Mniej: subtelniejszy stick shaker.

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Wzmocnienia efektów · Silnik, mechanika i opór

Touchdown thump65%

Jednorazowe szarpnięcie w chwili zetknięcia kół z pasem startowym, skalowane prędkością opadania: miękkie przyziemienie ledwie szepcze, twarde wyraźnie uderza.

Więcej: mocniejsze szarpnięcie przy przyziemieniu.

Mniej: łagodniejsze przyziemienia.

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Wibracje podczas dobiegu, gdy pracuje ciąg wsteczny lub śmigła w zakresie beta. Zero dla typów bez ciągu wstecznego.

Więcej: bardziej niespokojny dobieg przy ciągu wstecznym.

Mniej: cichszy ciąg wsteczny.

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Mniej: cichsze przestawianie klap.

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Podążanie za autopilotem

AP follow authority10%

Dlaczego tutaj: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
