A rushed departure turns a hot working day into a close call

Delanghe remembered a demanding day treating canola fields during an insect infestation. When the wind briefly dropped, tired pilots returned to work under pressure to help farmers whose crops were deteriorating. Reloading and departing quickly, he missed a flap setting and failed to appreciate how much hotter the afternoon had become.

A pickup turning onto the gravel departure road suddenly made the aircraft’s sluggish acceleration critical. He recalled clearing it by a small margin after correcting the flap setting, then returning from the spraying job shaken by the experience. Looking back, he connected the episode with fatigue, haste and inadequate attention to conditions.

Helping load an aircraft leads to a different working life

McClary grew up in a farming family and initially hoped to play professional baseball. After an injury redirected his plans, farming became his work, but helping a friend load Cessna 188s introduced another possibility. An interest in aviation developed into pilot certificates and long conversations about learning the agricultural business.

He began flying a Cessna 188 for Henry Haddock’s operation. The first year included difficult encounters with power lines, and the report describes him learning from those experiences and continuing with the company. Aircraft types and business arrangements changed over the following years, but the Cessna period remained the beginning of his ag-flying career. Later, he would mentor another newcomer as others had once helped him.

A pilot records what he could and could not explain

Christensen’s statement describes preparing for an agricultural departure after flying from the same field the previous day. He reviewed the work with the operator, checked the aircraft and began the takeoff with a load in the hopper. During the climb, he believed he would clear the obstacles ahead.

Near the end of the field, he recalled losing height before the aircraft struck a power line and came down. Spray mixture obscured the windshield, leaving him unable to describe the subsequent impact precisely. His written account distinguishes what he remembered from what he could only guess, including which part of the aircraft contacted the wire. It provides the pilot’s own account of the event, with those limits on his observations intact.

Cessna 188 AGTruck

Free + Pro
MSFS 2024

The 188 family is quite different from the high-wing touring singles usually associated with Cessna. A low wing and working-load hopper serve its agricultural purpose, while the pilot sits high behind the engine and load area. Production ran from the 1960s into the early 1980s.

This starting point selects Cessna 188 AGTruck. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The C188 AgTruck datasheet identifies the agricultural configuration and a three-blade constant-speed propeller. The low wing and working-load role distinguish it from Cessna's touring singles. Propeller and equipment context do not establish a calibrated control-force curve, so its stick-loading and vibration settings remain selected estimates.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Pourquoi ici : Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength74%

Pourquoi ici : The agricultural aircraft's nominal manual-control response is independent of the constant-speed propeller cue. The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 50 KIAS.

Carenado C188 developer data sheet on Steam
Spring deadband4%

Pourquoi ici : Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load80%

Pourquoi ici : The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.8 with an indicated-speed reference of 100 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Pourquoi ici : Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor50%

Pourquoi ici : Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start14.0 kt

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full50.0 kt

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Pourquoi ici : The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 50 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Pourquoi ici : Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load72%

Pourquoi ici : Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.72 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Pourquoi ici : Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Pourquoi ici : Caps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Pourquoi ici : Pitch relief remains a selected response to valid trim input, with the acquired datasheet not quantifying its authority. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

Carenado C188 developer data sheet on Steam
Trim relief (aileron)0%

Pourquoi ici : Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble40%

Pourquoi ici : Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Pourquoi ici : Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet35%

Pourquoi ici : Sets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet14%

Pourquoi ici : Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Pourquoi ici : Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump65%

Pourquoi ici : Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble12%

Pourquoi ici : Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Pourquoi ici : Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Pourquoi ici : Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
