A familiar skill in an unfamiliar cockpit

Sweazey wondered whether experience in American helicopters would make the Alouette’s opposite rotor direction difficult to learn. During the demonstration, he found himself making the required pedal corrections naturally. The aircraft already had nearly six hundred hours of use, but its appearance and straightforward walk-around inspection made a favourable first impression.

In flight, he liked the steady feel of the controls and the view shared by the occupants of the roomy cabin. An attempted hover well above the ground initially became a climb, reminding him how much power was available at that day’s loading. His enthusiasm did not erase every criticism: the parking brake left him wishing for individual toe brakes.

Saying goodbye to a helicopter learned by heart

Robert’s connection with the Alouette began in the early 1990s. Flying with the Grasshoppers display team brought particular satisfaction: the pilots trusted one another and knew the helicopter closely. Years later, that familiarity remained central to the way he described it, as the Dutch service prepared to retire its last aircraft.

Navigation could mean a map on the pilot’s lap, with headings and elapsed time doing work that newer cockpit equipment would handle differently. Mountain visits to Austria and Switzerland added another dimension to the experience. Robert also credited the technicians whose efforts kept the ageing helicopters ready.

Mountain flying becomes a way to help people

Kraxner arrived at Aigen for advanced Alouette III training after learning on the Saab Safir and JetRanger. The long course introduced him to mountain operations, formation flying, external loads and hoisting. Growing up near the airfield had made helicopters familiar sights; now the landscape around it became part of his working education.

A rescue assignment in 1986 brought together his interest in the mountains and the satisfaction of helping someone. In the interview, that experience marks the start of his medical-rescue flying, before later civilian work on other helicopters. The Alouette therefore occupies a specific place in his career: the aircraft in which demanding training developed into a lasting professional interest. His later AS350 experiences belong to the next chapter of that story.

MSFS 2020

Sud Aviation developed the Alouette III as a larger follow-on to the Alouette II. The design uses a single turbine, a three-bladed main rotor and wheeled landing gear. It served civilian and military operators in transport, rescue and many other roles.

This starting point selects Aérospatiale Alouette III. Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Local force trim is off. Autopilot following is off.

Cyclic damping is on. Its configured gain is 0.35; it resists hardware motion separately from the spring and aircraft stabilization.

Controls and trim

Taog's SA316B manual describes an articulated three-blade main rotor and pedal-controlled tail-rotor pitch. The basic aircraft has three wheels; skis and floats are separate surface kits. An optional Astazou attachment is described, but the attachment alone does not show a different simulated engine or cyclic-loading system. Rotor and ground cues retain the selected equipment's scope.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Warum hier: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength0%

Warum hier: The cyclic's configured centre and damping provide a handling reference for the articulated-rotor helicopter; blade count does not determine cyclic hand force. The baseline spring is 0. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 50 KIAS.

Download manualExact product and documentation research
Spring deadband2%

Warum hier: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load35%

Warum hier: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.35 with an indicated-speed reference of 100 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Warum hier: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor100%

Warum hier: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start14.0 kt

Warum hier: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full50.0 kt

Warum hier: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Warum hier: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed0%

Warum hier: Adds permitted spring resistance above the full-blend speed. Zero removes this high-speed increase.

Centre stiffening cap5

Warum hier: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load100%

Weniger: leichtere, quirligere Querruder.

Warum hier: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 1 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Warum hier: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Warum hier: Caps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Warum hier: Scales supported pitch-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes pitch response.

Trim relief (aileron)30%

Weniger: Rolltrimmung bewirkt weniger.

Warum hier: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble15%

Rollende Untergrundvibration aus Radgeschwindigkeit und Oberflächenart: die Textur von Asphalt, Gras oder Schotter unter dem Fahrwerk.

Mehr: lautere Oberflächentextur durch den Stick.

Weniger: ruhigeres Rollen.

Warum hier: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps0%

Weniger: weichere Bodendetails.

Warum hier: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet0%

Warum hier: Sets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Warum hier: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet0%

Weniger: ruhigere Anflugklappen.

Warum hier: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Warum hier: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Warum hier: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump50%

Warum hier: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Ausrollvibration bei Schubumkehr oder Beta-Verstellung. Null für Muster ohne Umkehr.

Mehr: ein rauerer Ausrollvorgang unter Umkehrschub.

Weniger: leisere Umkehr.

Warum hier: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble6%

Warum hier: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion0%

Warum hier: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority5%

Warum hier: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.

StickFeel · Trim feel enabledFalse

Whether this feature is active in this profile.

Warum hier: Retained for compatibility and group membership. Trim relief, rather than this flag, controls centre movement.

StickFeel · Trim relief enabledFalse

Whether this feature is active in this profile.
