The prototype changed during flight testing

Deputy chief designer A. J. Coombe recalled that the early Islander needed improvements to longitudinal trim, drag and single-engine performance. Enlarging the elevator trim tab was only part of the answer; changing the tailplane incidence also helped.

More wing and different engines

Coombe’s recollection describes extending the wing and replacing the prototype’s 210 hp Continental engines with 260 hp Lycomings. The revised aircraft returned to testing in early 1966. The Islander’s practical production configuration emerged through that programme rather than arriving complete at its first flight.

A new Islander still had individual quirks

Unwin liked the clean cockpit and was surprised by how tightly the Islander could turn on the ground. In flight it felt stable, although the ailerons were relatively heavy and reaching the roof-mounted trim control took familiarity. Radio equipment placed to the side was less convenient to read than the displays directly ahead.

Landing introduced the demonstrator’s own quirks. Unwin flared too high on his first attempt, and stiff throttles made precise power changes harder during later short-field work. Hargreaves had warned him about that adjustment issue, and practice improved the results. The report combines affection for the design with specific criticisms of the aircraft he flew.

Flying the aircraft that first took him home

Robertson first travelled in an Islander as a newborn leaving the hospital in Stanley. Growing up in a flying family made the aircraft part of ordinary life long before he became a commercial pilot. After training in Britain, he returned to the Falklands and built experience through months of supervised local flying.

The work varied with the seasons: tourists in summer, and freight such as food, mail, washing machines and building supplies alongside other year-round duties. Medical transport and fisheries or scientific flights added further variety. He particularly enjoyed calm, clear winter days and trips that brought him back to family at Port Stephens.

Delivering a new Islander through a disrupted world

Eddleston joined the delivery in Montreal after another pilot brought the aircraft across from Britain. Pandemic restrictions, paperwork and holiday closures complicated the route south, including an extended wait in Daytona. The ferry installation made unusually long legs possible, so this journey was very different from a passenger flight in a standard Islander.

Caribbean water gave way to Andean mountains and Chilean glaciers as the delivery progressed. Fuel arrangements sometimes required improvised communication across a language barrier. On the final leg to the Falklands, a radio problem made the carried satellite communications equipment valuable. A large welcoming group at Stanley brought home what the new aircraft meant to its community.

BlackBox BN2T Turbine Islander

Free + Pro
MSFS 2020MSFS 2024BlackBox Simulation

Britten-Norman designed the Islander in the 1960s as a light transport. Its roles span regional passenger services, utility work and military operations. Piston and turbine implementations appear in the simulator catalogue, with their own package names and documentation. The long production history makes variant and equipment context especially useful when comparing examples.

This profile selects BlackBox BN2T Turbine Islander for MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024.

Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

Islander products separate piston BN2B-26 and turbine BN2T aircraft, with the larger BN2T-4S Defender retaining its own capacity and weight context. TorqueSim documents a custom KFC225, while BlackBox's turbine aircraft uses GI275/GMC500 equipment. A real Defender's KFC325 is not that add-on installation. Thranda's piston BN2A offers DynaFeel and configurable panels. Engine and avionics choices are therefore kept attached to the selected product.

The selected implementation

BlackBox's BN2T/Defender package uses GI275/GMC500 and an optional separately installed PMS50 GTN750. A real Defender's KFC325 is a different installation.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Pourquoi ici : Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength68%

Pourquoi ici : The selected reversible yoke response is independent of piston or turbine cues; DynaFeel changes input response and is not a calibrated device-force signal. The baseline spring is 0.68. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 65 KIAS.

Spring deadband4%

Pourquoi ici : Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load60%

Pourquoi ici : The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.6 with an indicated-speed reference of 125 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Pourquoi ici : Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor50%

Pourquoi ici : Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start20 kt

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full65 kt

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Pourquoi ici : Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed15%

Pourquoi ici : The high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.15. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 65 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.

Centre stiffening cap5

Pourquoi ici : Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load76%

Pourquoi ici : Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.76 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Pourquoi ici : Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Pourquoi ici : Caps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)32%

Pourquoi ici : The BlackBox tutorial documents pitch and rudder trim wheels. Pitch relief is separate from yaw trim and from each product's autopilot guidance. Pitch authority 0.32 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

Trim relief (aileron)0%

Pourquoi ici : Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble27%

Pourquoi ici : Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps25%

Pourquoi ici : Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet20%

Pourquoi ici : Sets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet10%

Pourquoi ici : Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Pourquoi ici : Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump42%

Pourquoi ici : Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Pourquoi ici : Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble6%

Pourquoi ici : Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion12%

Pourquoi ici : Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority10%

Pourquoi ici : Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
