A night evacuation depends on the whole crew

Greenhalgh remembered being woken before dawn to collect a badly injured soldier after Goose Green. Finding his crew among frozen sleeping bags was only the beginning. On the return flight, cloud, terrain and ice turned the journey towards the field hospital into a difficult struggle to establish where they were and keep the Scout clear of the mountains.

His recollection gives particular credit to the people who helped. Gammon called out the radar-altimeter readings, radio stations helped locate the aircraft, and Walker intervened when they came dangerously close to the water near Ajax Bay. After delivering the casualty, Greenhalgh chose to wait for daylight and refuel. He remembered the intense hour as having passed almost instantly.

The first operational helicopter remains a demanding favourite

The Wasp was Taylor’s first operational aircraft after earning his wings. As a new naval pilot, he found it difficult enough to require sustained effort and practice. Returning to assess it later as a test pilot confirmed that the challenge had not simply been a beginner’s impression: he still regarded it as a demanding helicopter.

He recalled more than a thousand deck landings, severe weather and an engine failure that ended in a ditching. Those experiences gave the aircraft a lasting place in his affections, even though he considered the later Lynx more capable for the job. His attachment to the Wasp rests in having learned his trade in it and lived through its difficulties.

A veteran’s talk connects Antarctic work with wartime flying

At a club evening forty years after the Falklands War, Ellerbeck described his service aboard HMS Endurance. Fawkes’s report recalls the talk beginning with the ship’s earlier Antarctic survey work and a friendly visit to Buenos Aires. That setting gave the audience a sense of the working life that preceded the conflict.

Ellerbeck then described taking his Wasp into the action against the submarine Santa Fe, with ground fire increasing as the attack continued. The account moved the audience, including another helicopter pilot who reflected on the difficulty of flying from ships in such conditions.

Westland Scout (skids)

Free + Pro
MSFS 2024MSFS 2020

The Scout developed from the Saunders-Roe P.531 for British Army utility service. It used a compact cabin, exposed engine area and skid undercarriage. The related Wasp shared origins and components but was adapted for naval work.

This starting point selects Westland Scout (skids). Its aircraft-level settings do not select a particular developer’s custom systems.

The cyclic response accompanies the selected utility-helicopter configuration. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load. Cyclic damping adds resistance to hardware motion.

Trim response is separate from naval fittings and landing-gear choice. Local force trim is off. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The Scout and naval Wasp share P531 origins but have different undercarriage and mission equipment. The Scout uses skids for land utility work, while the Wasp adds wheels and shipboard fittings.

Westland Scout & Wasp Manual

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Master gain & control system

Master gain85%

Por qué aquí: Scales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.

Forces

Spring strength0%

Por qué aquí: The cyclic response accompanies the selected utility-helicopter configuration. The baseline spring is 0. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 50 KIAS.

Westland Scout & Wasp Manual
Spring deadband2%

Por qué aquí: Sets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.

Overall aerodynamic load35%

Por qué aquí: The aerodynamic-load gain is 0.35 with an indicated-speed reference of 100 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.

Airspeed blendingTrue

Por qué aquí: Allows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.

Low-speed spring floor100%

Por qué aquí: Sets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.

Spring engagement start14.0 kt

Por qué aquí: Sets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.

Spring engagement full50.0 kt

Por qué aquí: Sets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.

Por qué aquí: Sets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.

Centre firmness vs speed0%

Por qué aquí: Adds permitted spring resistance above the full-blend speed. Zero removes this high-speed increase.

Centre stiffening cap5

Por qué aquí: Limits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.

Aileron load100%

Por qué aquí: Roll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 1 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.

Elevator load100%

Por qué aquí: Scales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.

Max output force55%

Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.

Trim

Trim relief (elevator)30%

Menos: sigues sosteniendo esfuerzo aun compensado.

Por qué aquí: Scales supported pitch-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes pitch response.

Trim relief (aileron)30%

Por qué aquí: Scales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.

Effect gains · Ground

Runway rumble0%

Por qué aquí: Sets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.

Gear bumps0%

Por qué aquí: Sets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.

Effect gains · Airframe

Stall buffet0%

Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.

Mach buffet0%

Por qué aquí: Sets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.

Flap buffet0%

Por qué aquí: Sets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.

Gear buffet0%

Por qué aquí: Sets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.

Stick shaker50%

Por qué aquí: Sets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.

Effect gains · Engine, mechanical & drag

Touchdown thump50%

Por qué aquí: Sets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.

Reverse rumble0%

Por qué aquí: Sets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.

Engine rumble6%

Por qué aquí: Sets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.

Flap motion0%

Por qué aquí: Sets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.

Autopilot follow

AP follow authority5%

Por qué aquí: Sets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
